Why connect your EV charger?
Your EV can be one of the largest electrical loads in your home. Knowing when it starts and stops charging allows MAP Energy to understand that load and coordinate your Powerwall around it.
A supported charger connection can allow MAP Energy to identify EV charging activity, display EV charging information and use charging events as automation triggers.
One of the most useful EV automations is preventing your Powerwall from supplying an EV charging session when you would rather preserve that stored energy for your home.
Supported EV charger integrations
MAP Energy supports several EV charging integrations. The connection method and information available can differ depending on the charger.
Tesla Wall Connector
Integrate supported Tesla Wall Connector charging information with MAP Energy for live EV power, charging detection, history and EV-based automations.
myenergi Zappi
Connect a compatible myenergi Zappi so MAP Energy can use available charging information as part of your energy monitoring and automation setup.
Hypervolt
Connect a supported Hypervolt charger to provide MAP Energy with charging status and available EV charging information for monitoring and automations.
Ohme
Connect supported Ohme charging information so MAP Energy can recognise charging activity and use EV charging events within compatible automations.
Other EV charging
Where a direct charger integration is not available, MAP Energy may still be able to identify EV charging using other supported charging detection methods.
Not every charger exposes the same information or control capabilities. MAP Energy uses the functionality available from each supported integration, so some features may differ between charger brands.
What can MAP Energy use from my charger?
The exact information available depends on the charger and integration, but supported connections can provide MAP Energy with useful EV charging information.
Determine whether your EV is currently charging and detect charging start and stop events.
Where available, MAP Energy can use the charger's reported power to identify the EV load within your home energy usage.
Supported EV charging data can be incorporated into MAP Energy history so you can better understand how much of your household energy use is going into charging your vehicle.
Charging start and stop events can be used to trigger compatible MAP Energy automations.
EV charger automations
Once MAP Energy can identify when your EV starts and stops charging, those events can be used as automation triggers.
This is particularly useful for coordinating EV charging with a Tesla Powerwall.
EV charging doesn't have to control your Powerwall. You can also use an EV event for a notification or send it to Home Assistant and decide what happens there.
EV charging & smart tariffs
EV charger information becomes even more useful when MAP Energy is also connected to a supported smart electricity tariff.
Some smart tariffs can schedule EV charging dynamically. This means charging may begin outside the normal fixed off-peak period.
MAP Energy can combine supported tariff information with EV charging detection to help coordinate your Powerwall around these charging periods.
MAP Energy includes automation support for compatible Intelligent Octopus Go setups, helping your configured Powerwall behaviour respond to smart EV charging periods.
Supported EDF Smart Bolt-On events can also be used by MAP Energy, including smart charging start and stop events that can trigger Powerwall actions, notifications or Home Assistant webhooks.
Connecting an EV charger
EV charger connections are configured from within MAP Energy.
The exact connection process depends on the charger you select, but MAP Energy will guide you through the information required for that integration.
Open the EV charging or charger configuration area within MAP Energy.
Choose the EV charger or charging integration that matches your setup.
Follow the instructions shown for that charger. Different manufacturers require different connection information or authorisation methods.
Once connected, MAP Energy can begin using the supported charger information available from your integration.
How does MAP Energy detect charging?
MAP Energy monitors available charger information to determine when a charging session has started or stopped.
Charging does not always change instantaneously. Chargers can briefly report low power, pause during a session or take time to update their status.
MAP Energy therefore applies charging detection logic rather than treating every individual power reading as a new charging event.
A brief drop or spike in charger power should not necessarily be treated as the end or beginning of a charging session. MAP Energy confirms charging state before generating supported EV start and stop events.
EV charging in Live & History
Where supported charging power is available, MAP Energy can show the EV as part of your live home energy picture.
This makes it easier to understand how much of the power currently entering your home is being used by the vehicle rather than normal household demand.
Supported EV charging information can also be incorporated into History, helping separate EV consumption from the rest of your household energy use.
Does MAP Energy control my EV charger?
Connecting an EV charger does not automatically mean that MAP Energy can remotely control every function of that charger.
Charger manufacturers expose different capabilities. Some integrations may provide charging status and power information without providing direct charging control.
MAP Energy only uses the functionality supported by the individual integration.
Do not assume that features available with one charger will also be available with another. Available MAP Energy options are determined by the capabilities of the connected charger and integration.
What if my charger disconnects?
Third-party charger integrations depend on the services provided by the charger manufacturer.
Authentication can expire, manufacturer services can become temporarily unavailable, or an account connection can be revoked.
If MAP Energy cannot retrieve the charging information required by an EV automation, that can prevent the expected EV event from being detected.
If charging is no longer appearing correctly, check the EV charger connection in MAP Energy and reconnect the integration if requested.
EV charger questions
No. EV charger integrations are optional. MAP Energy can still be used with your Powerwall and other supported services without connecting an EV charger.
EV charging can create a large household load. Detecting it allows MAP Energy to distinguish that load and lets you create automations that respond when charging starts or stops.
MAP Energy can use supported Powerwall controls to change how your Powerwall behaves when EV charging is detected. A common strategy is to preserve the Powerwall while the vehicle is charging and restore normal settings when the session finishes.
Not necessarily. Smart charging schedules may be managed by your charger, vehicle or electricity supplier. MAP Energy can respond to supported charging events without needing to be the service that originally scheduled the charge.
Charger integrations update at different speeds, and MAP Energy also confirms charging state to reduce false start or stop events caused by short power fluctuations.
Possibly. New integrations depend on whether the charger manufacturer provides a suitable and reliable way for MAP Energy to retrieve the information required. Suggestions for additional charger integrations are welcome.
Need help?
If your EV charger is connected but charging is not being detected correctly, check the charger connection in MAP Energy first.
If the connection appears healthy but the problem continues, contact MAP Energy support and include your charger brand, the approximate time of a recent charging session and a description of what you expected to happen.
This information can help us compare the charger data with MAP Energy's EV detection and automation history.
